Marie Maxime Cornu established the endoparasitic genus Rozella in 1872 (Cornu 1872), describing four species:
Clements and Shear (1931) lectotypfied the genus with R. septigena as the type species. Species have been based primarily on host, with other characters, such as resting spore structure and impact on host morphology, as additional characters.
